I would tend to agree with you here. Also an utter sleaze bag in the way he conducts his personal life. However, he certainly had millions of conservative Americans, including their leaders, fooled for quite a long time.

Are conservatives just naturally extremely gullible?

Charley, I think you'll have to take it up with Neocon as to whether Gingrich is/was really a conservative. Perhaps Neocon could confer with his good friend Arianna Huffington and explain how all the New Age fuzzy-wuzzy stuff tied into bedrock conservative principles.
