the $450m do not represent new orders for equipment makers.

Applied Materials to Invest $500 Mln to Expand Diagnostics Unit in Israel

"Demand for computer chips is surging as use of cell phones, navigation systems and other devices increases. As the technology on the chips gets smaller, the demand for equipment to make sure they are flawless increases. " ''We see this as a multi-billion dollar market,'' Morgan said of the diagnostics industry. The company's goal is to increase its share of the market to 45 percent from 14 percent, he said."

Worldwide 4th-Quarter PC Shipment Forecast Cut to 17% by Intl Data Corp.

"IDC blamed the lower forecast on a slowdown in corporate PC purchases because of the Year 2000 date change and a shortage of components after an earthquake in Taiwan in late September. Several PC makers, including Dell Computer Corp., have blamed the earthquake for crimping profits."
