John, maybe this helps:

From briefing.com
11:34 ET Intel (INTC) 76 7/8 -1: Rumors on trading desks that company will preannounce Q1 earnings. Such rumors are common at this time of the quarter for Intel (and more often than not untrue), but they are being fuelled today by negative comments about Gateway (GTW) from Salomon Smith Barney, which cites Intel supply constraints.

11:32 ET Gateway (GTW) 68 7/16 -2 11/16: Stock trading off on negative comments from Salomon Smith Barney, which issued a note this morning arguing that supply constraints on Intel (INTC) processors preclude an upside surprise in Q4, says that Intel has apparently capped GTW's Q4 supply at quantities sufficient for GTW to meet but not exceed EPS consensus.

John,
RE:"Paul: Any guesses on the reason for INTC's crap performance of late. Is there a missile I haven't seen heading up our tail pipe? Seems to me that when you cut away all the BS the numbers will be great. Unit prices should be great as AMD hasn't started the price cutting because they are doing OK. I don't get it but I guess I never do when this kind of irrational pessimism develops. JFD"...

Probably for the same reason that Paul is the largest AMD shareholder on the SI-AMD thread <G>...excluding myself.

Jim

PS...Just think of Intels stock price as a head of Lettuce.. <G>

Hiya,

I do not understand it...

I expected Intel to be over $ 90 already, yet it is still sinking....

Paul was right when he said this stock is very difficult to own, and it is almost a counter-cyclical stock i.e it goes up when the market goes down and vice versa.

Lately, it just goes up a bit, and down a lot.

This is also the BEST time of year.

What happens when the conditions are not as favorable, and this company has not participated... ?

What a mess...

Intel, MicroSoft and dell.... 3 losers, when they should not be

Take care
Jean

Dear John: MISSLES, more like torpedoes. This is the worst performance I can remember for INTC and I DONT MEAN STOCK PRICE. On SNAFU after another. They need to get a handle on QUALITY control. They may not be running scared of AMD but they SURE ACT LIKE IT!! JDN

John - Re: ": Any guesses on the reason for INTC's crap performance of late. Is there a missile I haven't seen heading up our tail pipe?"

1. They make things that can be touched and sold - that's bad.

2. Their production can be measured - also bad.

3. They make mucho profits - that's bad - because PROFITS can sometimes go down.

4. Intel suddenly has a mighty competitor (AMD) that Wall Street recognizes as a superior company - that may even break even or post a profit for the first time this year.

5. Intel has "no exposure to the internet".

6. Salomon Smith Barney was WRONG last month about Intel's business and production levels - so they regurgitated Jonathan Joseph's MISTAKE into a Gateway bash (by a different analyst) this month, slamming Intel as the culprit. Joseph is also trying to save face because he predicted that Gateway would introduce an AMD ATHWIPE CPU - and they haven't yet done so. Salomon and Joseph decided to punish Gateway and Intel for making him look even more stupid.

7. Intel has no future products in the pipeline.

8. Even if Intel did have future products in the pipeline, the analysts will say they are too powerful and not needed - or else not powerful enough.

9. Intel is not diversified - and is too focused on MicroProcessors.

10. Intel has been too busy diversifying, taking away their strategic focus on Microprocessors.

11. Intel's new microprocessors are too fast for the marketplace - and nobody needs all that speed.

12. AMD has a "faster" microprocessor than Intel - and every body wants it and has stopped buying Intel's products because they are too slow.

13. Y2K fears will affect Intel's business.

14. Even if Y2K problems won't effect Intel's business, analysts are already predicting potential slow down due to future Y3K concerns.
