Gilder and FC was a topic more then once at SSB but again SUN's Jeff Allen had his own unique tilt on things.
It has been stated that Gilder thinks that SANs is a fad but he sees a space for the NAS. Gilder is a GE fan who thinks GE should run the world.
Mr. Allen's take on Gilder is that he is partially right and a little miss understood. Gilder believes that eventually there will be one dominant network topology that really will run all the networks a backbone as such with smaller niche technologies like NAS having a space in smaller environments. Jeff Allen of SUN believes that Gilder is right on the money there -Eventually there will be one network topology that will run over all the other ones- SAN and LAN will become one indistinguishable network.
Gilder thinks it is GE that wins this battle so he discounts FC as a fad because it competes in a space that he thinks GE has already won- Your going to have one network and not with 2 competing technologies. Hence to him in THE ONE NETWORK world FC is the fad as he believes GE is superior to FC. Since GE is Einstein to him a dumbed down version of SAN known as NAS will have a place in the market probably running off your computer.
Jeff Allen agreed with Gilder's one really fast very seamless Network theory in the future. Where he differs is which technology wins out. FC or GE- He said that battle is farther down the road and gets fought on another day and in his mind that FC - GE battle will occur. So I think Jeff allen would disagree with Gilder in that it is way too early to pick the ultimate Network technology winner.

The reason that SUN is not concerened about exclusivity
is because they don't see the switch as the solution -What SUN does with the switch is what is important to SUN.
Give company A, B , C and Sun each an Ancor switch. SUN feels they will optimize it's use in there solution better then anybody. They seemed absolutely confident of this.
So SUN isn't really concerned who Ancor sells too. I think they appreciate that Ken got on the horn with them about INTEL and heard it wasn't a problem.

Sorry I missed you Wind Cast- I did ask a question during the Ancor session about the 64/128 port switch.
You guys had front row seats at DataQuest lunch- They stuck me in the back in the nose bleed seats <g>
