NN news Newbridge Complements LMDS Winning Streak with Industry Award and Federal Communications Commission Authorization Industry Recognition Underscores Newbridge Leadership in Broadband Wireless Market CHANTILLY, VIRGINIA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 8, 1999-- Broadband wireless industry leader Newbridge Networks (TSE:NNC. - news; NYSE:NN - news) today announced it has received the Frost and Sullivan Market Engineering Vendor Excellence Award for its leadership in LMDS broadband wireless development. Newbridge(r) LMDS equipment has also achieved FCC certification, accelerating commercial deployment of the Newbridge solution in the United States. LMDS is a high frequency broadband wireless system that can be quickly deployed to cost-effectively deliver data, high-speed Internet, voice, video and multimedia services using point-to-multipoint distribution systems. The Newbridge broadband wireless access solution for LMDS enables service providers to enter the telecommunications market quickly with a broad portfolio of premium quality services for business customers. Frost and Sullivan presents its Market Engineering Awards to companies having a positive influence on developing and advancing emerging technologies and markets. Newbridge Networks is the only LMDS vendor to receive this year's Vendor Excellence Award. ``Newbridge has demonstrated tremendous leadership in developing and enhancing a full suite of broadband wireless products by leveraging its strong position in ATM technology,' stated Frost and Sullivan in its research report entitled World LMDS Equipment and Service. According to the report, ``By developing solutions that are modular and highly scalable, Newbridge Networks has displayed foresight in not only catering to customers' current needs but also enabling them to accommodate future growth and applications.' The comprehensive Newbridge broadband wireless solution for LMDS represents a multiservice network comprising base station and customer premise equipment. A base station, consisting of the MainStreetXpress(tm) 36170 Multiservices Switch - the industry's largest selling asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switch - and point-to-multipoint transmitters and receivers, is the central location that collects all traffic to and from customers within a given wireless coverage area. It is also the linking point between the customer and the network backbone. Customer premise equipment includes transceivers and network interface units (NIUs), which support a full range of services. The MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager manages both the wireless and wireline portions of the network, providing a full range of billing, statistics and maintenance support. FCC certification of transmission equipment within the Newbridge solution attests to its stability and compliance with radio spectrum guidelines, enabling commercial shipments of the solution to proceed as planned. A pioneer and current leader in the LMDS market, the Newbridge broadband wireless solution has been selected by 19 LMDS customers in the United States, Canada, South America, Asia and Europe. In addition, 14 customers are conducting field trials. Newbridge Networks is also actively engaged in discussions with customers that represent 63 additional network deployments. ``Newbridge took an early lead in the development and deployment of LMDS/MMDS broadband wireless networks,' said Conrad Lewis, executive vice president, Access Products Group, Newbridge Networks. ``We are pleased with the global market uptake of our comprehensive solution and the validation of our technology by both industry leaders and regulatory bodies such as the FCC.' The Newbridge LMDS broadband wireless solution has also been recognized with the Data Communications magazine Hot Product Award, and two International Engineering Consortium (IEC) InfoVision awards.
