Thank-you for your post on DMA.

The article your URL points to seems to thoroughly discuss the matter, and its URLs point to point to good explanations as well, but one could get a little bogged in the details if they are new to this stuff.

The quick answer is to just check the box and re-boot. If all is well, the box stays checked -- end of story. If not, it's time to dig into the URLs you provided.

As usual, a backup beats a repair.

Cheers, PW.

P.S. When I got my system, DMA was disabled. I don't know why, when Windows checks hardware so thoroughly, this gets overlooked, but it does, adding to the list of Windows' mysteries for me.

P.P.S. I didn't notice any performance improvement, but I do very simple stuff on a lightly loaded machine. Your mileage may vary.

hey doug,

maybe someone can help me with this little problem.

i've had a few invalid page faults caused by netscape where the offending file is COMCTL32.DLL. i see that i have two of these on my hd. one is version 4.00.95 and the other is v 5.80. the older v is for an iomega tools application. i don't know what the newer one does, but it's in my system folder.

i think that the IPF is being caused by 'dell hell', or the older version being called up when the newer one is required. i'd like to delete v4.00.95 from my hd, but that brings me to the questions:

if i delete the old one, will the new one just automatically be substituted in when called for?

and is it valid to just change the name to say COMCTL32.ABC on the old v just to see if things get better?

appreciate any help!

:)

mark

<<Want to speed your hard drive by 15% or more? Reduce the load on your CPU by up to 40%? All for free?>>

Took your advice and have noticed an increase in my HD speed. Don't know how much, but there is at least a 15% inc. The warning scared me some but I figured it was worth a shot. Thanks.
