Those are all just soundbytes too. And plenty of companies think they hire talented people... the difference is they don't get the TOP (technical) people, because they let rigid personnel policies dictate their organization. Amzn did not do that... I know it for a fact.

I think the problem is, once upon a time IBM dominated everybody's IT dept. The people that worked in IT mostly wrote reports. Now IT drives the company and the salaries and mgmt structure have not caught up, unless you have a CEO willing to cut deals, like Bezos and Siebel.

You know what etoys has? They have 3 directors, one warehouse/logistics, one purchasing, one something else.. 3 guys that come from retail or somewhere, and they expect the technical people to work for these 3 guys. Yeah right - any good technical person is going to want more than that... plus the logistics guy has never heard of i2... how can he even think about hiring people more qualified than him.
