Interesting article re SAN potential in general with focus on CRDS:

fnews.yahoo.com

Can anyone explain in lay terms the difference between a router and a switch. Do routers compete with switches at the high end? My recollection is that CSCO dominated the router market in LANs. Also, does CRDS have any competition in FC routers ala ANCR & BRCD.

Thanks in advance,

Eric

Ed, Alan, Windcast,

Thank you very much for the reports from the SSB conference. You guys were great. I just have a thought about Brocade's claim that they rejected Intel's request for a collaboration on making new switches. I think that Intel would have a set of requirements and was looking for leadership in the 'transport' area within the Infiniband architecture. What would be the reason for rejecting such a lucrative offer?

1. They really believe that there will be no market for 'Infiniband'. In other words, they believe the current PCI channel bus structure is more than adequate. IBM, CPQ, DELL, SUN, HWP, INTEL, etc are all wrong in fighting for years to try to promote NGIO, Future IO. And, finally compromise to form a single standard which now call 'System IO'. Infiniband will base on 'System IO'.

2. They don't think they can deliver the requirements which were presented to them. So, to save face, reject it. All IMHO and speculation.

So, which is it?
