DELL has been caught this year in a "theme" transition by the mutual funds. The mutual funds have been investing in "backbone internet" plays. DELL has not made the case that it is an "internet backbone" player. DELL will be shipping its Poweredge 8450 starting December 31. This server can be used as a web server for e-commerce as well as an enterprise level server. This product gets great price/performance numbers. Companies like SUNW despite their relatively lower growth numbers in EPS and revenue are being given multiples of more than 100 by these mutual funds. This is because they have sold their "internet stories" to the mutual fund managers. DELL has not attempted to do this. I believe that the "mutual fund themes" are now driving the stock market more than the analysts. If DELL wanted to drive their stock price up it could begin to implement an "internet backbone" story. This could be a simple as creating servers specificlly addressing the web server hosting market. Prepacking their servers with e-commerce capability,so that SMB can by off the shelf e-commerce capability from DELL. To be continued...
