Globalstar (San Jose, CA) will launch satellite phone services in the Middle East, Australia, S Africa and Russia between February-May 2000, after launching services in Europe, S Korea, China and the Americas by mid-February 2000, according to Mac Jeffery, spokesperson.

The announcement confirms a report by Reuters. Six gateway stations are currently in operation and will support the first round of countries, with eight additional gateways scheduled to come online shortly to support the 2nd group. Services to other parts of the world will launch later in 2000 and in early-2001.
