I am not sure if this was the quote or not but here is one similar to what you are saying:

In response to a rumor that he was not a Christian, Lincoln made a public statement published in the Illinois Gazette, August 15, 1846.

" That I am not a member of any Christian Church, is true; but I have never denied the truth of the Scriptures; and I have never spoken with intentional disrespect of religion in general, or of any denomination of Christians in particular...I do not think I could, myself, be brought to support a man for office whom I knew to be an open enemy of, and scoffer of religion.""

This was in 1846. It is also interesting to note that Lincoln had began attending services and carrying his bible and praying more after the death of his 12 year old son in 1862, until his death three years later. It is said that the death of his son, and the visit to the Gettysburg battlefield in 1863 finally led Lincoln to personal faith in Christ.

If that was not the right quote, if you can come up with some key words or who the quote was given to, I will try to find it.
