Did anyone check out the Best Buy flier today? Best Buy is offering no payments until Jan 3, 2001 on any system with an Intel Chip. Except for one build to order Athlon the flyer is exclusively Intel based machines, unless I missed one.
Is Intel having to finance the sales of Besy Buy? Someone is buying the paper. Why is this only for Intel based machines. Is Intel helping or is Best Buy having to pick up some of the tab in order to sell Intel based machines or?

Jim

RE <<We are rapidly approaching the time for a possible earnings warning from inteL if it is to happen; and an earnings advisory from AMD if a sharp upside surprise is in store.>>>

DRBES, you really like messing with the gods; you know the exact opposite is just as possible; AMD warning of a shortfall and intc warning of an upside surprise.

You really don't think intc will do three in a row, do you?

<and an earnings advisory from AMD if a sharp upside surprise is in store.>

I was saying the same thing a few days back but after this weekend I am not sure anymore. A quick check in the channel shows almost 5:1 or 6:1 on K6:Athlon SKUs. I would have thought this would start heading toward 4:1 by this point in time and am somewhat surprised that it is not happening. Either AMD is out of Athlons for the quarter or there is some problem along the way.

Assuming the worst, I wouldn't be surprised if the quarter ends up being significantly higher K6 sales and only a modest upside on Athlon (which means the earnings upside is limited). That would still mean double digit earnings but not so grossly out of line with management guidance to justify a preannouncement.

Actually, we are PAST the probable time for a warning from Intel. The latest Intel has warned OR advised since 1996 is the 10th day of the last month of the quarter. We are well past that date.
Credit for this research goes to John Fowler who found it somewhere on the Intel company site.
Not that it couldn't happen, but it is unlikely now.
