Thank you VERY much for acknowleging that prop 13 has DESTROYED the schools in California so that a few people that bought homes before 1978 can reap a huge windfall off the system.

Its a travesty... schools used to be really good - well maybe not REALLY good but pretty good... now to get back to where we were only 20 years ago will take a huge infusion of cash.

I have never heard anyone in California complain about Prop 13 except those getting a paycheck from a government agency.

There are many examples of school districts in California that demonstrate success in spite of being funded at lower levels than underachieving districts.

What revenue was dried up by 13 has, in many cases, been made up for by development fees, special district assessments, and other money makers. I seem to recall that huge chunks of education funding in CA have been historically gobbled up by bi-lingual and special ed. programs. I could go on and on and on.....

I left the state a year ago, so I can't claim to have the very latest info on California education. I doubt the system or lobbying by special interest groups has changed much.

I will conclude by endorsing your view of the value of parents who are actively involved in school affairs. Aside from benefits going to your own children, the school benefits enormously from parental helpers. Unfortunately many schools cringe at parental "interference." Hired "experts" can't take the place of caring parents. Period.
