We saw the magic that the Qualcomm's handset R&D unit worked for Sony earlier this year

....equal only to the wonders coming out of Nokia's crack CDMA group.

Working from the premise that the reports are true....

It's better for Nokia to take a hit today (actually I think it is just part of the broad market sell-off) than in a quarter or two when Dataquest says that they have slipped to second in the US market. Yes I know that there are plenty of other large markets, but the US was still Nokia's biggest by sales last year.

I really only see positives in this for Nokia....what exactly will they give up? Maybe a billion dollars (this is the high-side)....and they will have to give up their own CDMA chip development (which they didnt seem very good at anyway). This will allow them to concentrate on what their strengths have always been....marketing, manufacturing and handset design.

I'm not surprised this leak coincides with a nine dollar drop in Nokia's share price. We saw the magic that the Qualcomm's handset R&D unit worked for Sony earlier this year.

Your brilliant analysis never ceases to amaze me.

Actually, the rumors have been around for 2 weeks -- but, the rumor fermented on Mon. Yesterday's [Tues] drop was probably just due to the general selloff of Nasdaq.

Nokia and QCOM with a closer tie would be quite a compelling story. I'd like to stay NOK maintain its competitive advantage, and acquisition of the Q's R&D has got to help.
