Williams Communications Receives $26.5 Million in Worldwide Fiber Inc. Transaction

December 16, 1999 08:00 AM
TULSA, Okla., Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The network unit of Williams Communications, Inc. WCG , a leading international provider of telecommunications services and products for the carrier marketplace, has completed a $26.5 million agreement to sell services and fiber capacity to Worldwide Fiber Inc.
The fibers Williams Communications is providing in this transaction are located primarily in the northeastern United States and will be used by Worldwide Fiber to expand its national network. The 20-year agreement also includes Williams Communications' receipt of monthly recurring revenue from Worldwide Fiber for collocation and network maintenance services.

Gordon Martin, senior vice president of global network services for the Williams network, said this transaction speaks to the quality of Williams' award-winning fiber-optic network. "Williams was the first to deploy fiber optics in decommissioned pipelines and to take advantage of the security of building along pipeline rights of way. Williams Communications is using that same ingenuity today in construction of the nation's most advanced and reliable network that is fully equipped to meet the present and future needs of carrier customers such as Worldwide Fiber."

Williams Communications has been rapidly deploying its next-generation nationwide network. Already exceeding 25,000-miles, Williams' network is scheduled to comprise 33,000 miles connecting 125 cities by the end of 2000. Construction of the network is progressing a year ahead of its initial plan.

The two companies in this agreement have a long-standing relationship. Earlier this year, Williams Communications and Pacific Fiber Link, a subsidiary of Worldwide Fiber, jointly constructed a multi-conduit fiber-optic backbone network between Sacramento, Calif. and Portland, Ore.

"This agreement with Williams Communications supports the roll-out of our terrestrial networks and related carrier service business," said Ron Stevenson, president of Worldwide Fiber. "By partnering with an industry leader like Williams Communications, we are able to continue completing important sections of long-haul multi-conduit fiber-optic backbone network."

Williams Communications' next-generation long-distance network is the fourth largest in the United States. The fully integrated architecture of the Williams Multi-Service Broadband Network(TM) couples ATM core switching with advanced optical networking technologies to provide carriers with data, voice, video and Internet services over the platform they choose. Using 10 Gbps transport systems with Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing, the Williams network operates in two directions on a single fiber, delivering more than 80 Gbps in eight waves in each direction.

Williams Communications is an industry leader in providing innovative services and advances in network technology. This year Williams Communications was named Best Wholesale Network by the readers of America's Network magazine. The company also received the SuperQuest award for Best Backbone Bandwidth. Most recently, the International Engineering Consortium awarded Williams Communications its InfoVision award in the category of public networks.

Sorry for the delay in my response.

I am still confident that WCG is a winner. It's just not one of those "dot COM" stocks, but without companies like WCG, the "dot COMs" couldn't exist!

We are probably seeing traditional end of year sales.

WCG will be a strong long term performer. Just don't expect it to double, or tripple within the next 3 months.
