Art and Thread,

I purchased the Canon A50 for a family member and got it in the mail last week. It cost about $340.00 and it has 1.3 megapixel resolution.

The camera is very solid with a brushed metal body. I resembles the Canon ELPH. I find it to be very compact compared to my new Epson PhotoPC 850Z. Also, my fingers are a bit unaccustomed to the crowded real estate on the control panel.

When I opened the box I was surprised to see no rechargeable battery pack. It comes with a single lithium photocell. The kind that costs about $12 at Walgreens. (I use the same type of battery in my SLR and I replace it about once a year.) I had to go out and buy the rechargeable NiMH equivalent (also a Canon brand item) for $99.99 so I am not happy about it. It adds $100.00 on the sticker price. For that money I might have considered upgrading to a different camera altoghether. The fact that it won't run on AA's is a drawback.

SHAME ON YOU, CANON.

The one positive note is the 8MB SanDisk CompactFlash card with the Canon private label. It comes in a protective plastic box as well.
