Great Western Gold Corp - Great Western discovers rare earth deposit in Sask. Great Western Gold Corp GWG Shares issued 14,047,995 1999-12-15 close $0.1 Thursday Dec 16 1999 Mr. Gary Billingsley reports The company has received the results of the fall exploration program confirm the Holdas Lake area of Saskatchewan may host one of the largest rare earth deposits in the world. The exploration program, carried out in September, 1999, involved trenching and sampling of what was originally thought to be a singular, exposed, narrow-vein source of TREO (total rare earth oxide) enriched material. Eleven trenches were completed, with nine exposing fresh rock, in what is a multiple-zone system of rare earth mineralization approximately 50 or 60 metres wide with a 400-metre strike length. While the trenching did not completely cover this width, at least three zones were uncovered, with every sample containing significant rare earth values. The trenching was conducted west to east, with all trenches ending in good mineralization on the hangingwall (east) side. Two of the zones, the West zone and the Main zone (30 metres apart), had intervals of sheared rock, which thin section work has determined is a diopside-rich skarn, containing values of TREO as high as 20.3 per cent. The Mylonite zone, which is granitic in nature and immediately east of the Main zone, contains narrow stringers of rare earth mineralization throughout and could represent a significant source of TREO. Results have been summarized for the widest higher grade mineralized zone in each trench (for practical purposes called shear) which tends to be the hangingwall exposure, and for the complete trench, which includes all rock continuously sampled across the trench. All assays are in per cent TREO: Zone Shear Trench grade Width grade Width (%) (m) (%) (m) West 2.0 3.9 1.4 5.9 Main 4.9 3.2 2.4 7.1 Mylonite 3.1 2.6 1.2 6.0 --- --- --- --- All zones 4.2 3.2 2.1 6.7 Zone Value Value shear* trench* ($) ($) West 288 - 586 196 - 397 Main 729 - 1,430 355 - 705 Mylonite 396 - 769 160 - 320 ----------- --------- All zones 582 - 1,161 301 - 599 * Gross values per tonne in U.S. dollars are provided to indicate the potential gross revenue per tonne of ore mined. All values are from a major U.S. supplier of rare earth products and cover a range of purity for separated products. Values are for oxide powders. Should the powder be further refined as metal and be marketable, metal values, based on USGS figures at year-end 1998, range from $9,750 (U.S.) per tonne to $19,768 (U.S.) per tonne for the Main zone shear value. Values assume separating the main rare earth elements into oxides. The products contributing to 95 per cent of the gross value are cerium, europlum, lanthanum, neodymium and praseodymium. This is the first of 15 known rare earth showings, on-strike from the Main zone, that will be explored by the company. A winter program consisting of ground geophysics and a 1,500-metre diamond drilling program over the Main zone will commence in January, 2000.
