Mike,

Indeed, if a hammer is all that you have, all problems look like a nail. Lack of TL is but an insignificant weakness in the communist implementation (I should have said premise, as I firmly believe that given the premise such an implementation is inevitable, but I do not want to get into a theoretical debate about the merits - none comes to mind, IMHO - of communism at this time!), particularly if you consider other major issues such as an one party system, restriction on individual freedom to express contrary opinions (and by extension, to innovate), a police state and last, but not the least, a fundamental misjudgement of the human propensity towards self-improvement.

The fact is that in the modern CB system, the real interest rates are ultimately set by the market. Hence, a centrally planned economy is a far cry from a centrally planned monetary system. In fact, in terms of rigidity, a gold-backed system rivals a communist one (ala a Manchurian Candidate scenerio)! Perhaps you also think that an independent judiciary should be abolished and legislature should reign supreme? I do not agree, and I believe that the present CB system is well-balanced and functioning rather well; it doesn't need to go off into the far-right of the economic spectra, which is just as harmful as the far left position.

If massive Federal subsidies into the agricultural and housing sectors have been misguided in your opinion, I am not going to debate it. But I think that for a vast majority of lower-to-middle economic class citizens, they have been a great help (please note that I rent, not own). Of course, the lower income strata do not exist in the radar of many who preach tough love!

This will be my last post on this topic, as it has now turned completely political in my view.
