If you are able to blush, dignity survives. I believe that very few men are able to blush. One of my dearest friends was able to, and when he and I talked about something embarrassing, we'd sort of flash at each other, pink coming and going on the cheeks, like some sort of mysterious code. I have never been to a wake. I've been to get-togethers after a funeral, lots of food, people standing around talking about mundane matters, kids running and playing, nothing quite like it. Everyone all dressed up. Better than parties and weddings, in a way, selfish way, I mean, a way I like better, because people aren't intent on getting drunk and having a blast. Talking about serious things. Seeing people they haven't seen in years.
