Cirrus, whoa, Intel really did impact Gateway's quarter:

Gateway acknowledged having trouble with its component supply, but said
earnings should be unscathed, according to a company spokesman.

Fortuna this week lowered his fourth-quarter sales estimate by $117 billion
to $2.65 billion, blaming Intel's issues with processor availability for
Gateway's holiday problems.

$117 billion shortfall! That's bigger than GE's yearly revenue. Gateway did say earnings "should be unscathed". Still, I guess they'll be sidling up with AMD now, huh?

As for this one:

and only a handful
of companies will be launching systems using the 800 megahertz version."

If the handful were Dell, Compaq, HP and Gateway, e.g., I certainly see nothing wrong with that.

By the way, did you ever see my "Intel makes the market for all x86 makers, including AMD" post? Come to think of it, they do that for the PC makers as well. I'd be glad to roll it back out, or PM it to you.

Tony

Cringe - Re: "Only a handful of companies will be selling 800MHz versions? Looks like Intel's standards are going down to AMD's standards."

Not quite.

AMD had only one company - Compaq - and they announced a Build To Order 750 MHz AThWiper ONLY.

That's why NOBODY has reported seeing any - NONE NADA ZERO - 750 Mhz AthWIPER PCs for sale anywhere !

So, a couple PC manufacturers should still put Intel ahead of AMD.

At least INVESTORS think so !

Re: "Do you have an updated link to the article? It has been removed."

Judging by the following "remark" from that article, it was MEANT to be posted MONDAY - that is, it was "embargoed" - but some editor let it slip out - and I snagged it before it was withdrawn !

"(DESK-should move to newspapers under embargo for Monday newspapers only and separately to screens, and Internet clients on time release for 0001 Eastern Standard Time, Dec. 20) "

Paul

Maybe they shouldn't have strayed from Intel before, they may not be high up on the preferred vendor list.

Intel Corp., will announce on Monday that it is shipping its fastest Pentium III processors yet, running at clock speeds of 750 and 800 megahertz, and taking the speed crown away from arch-rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

Only a handful of companies will be selling 800MHz versions?

Both speeds will be available starting on Monday with some limited quantities. The first PC makers to ship the 800 megahertz systems will be companies with the shortest manufacturing lead times, such as direct PC makers Dell Computer Corp. and Gateway Inc.
