I was using ethnic to mean the families I actually know who are black, Latino, Italian, Irish, hum, I have a Spanish friend as well who grew up brutalized. Relatively recent immigrants (except the blacks) who were economically fairly downscale, didn't have very good educations, were somewhat superstitious and probably felt a bit powerless in the larger scheme of things, had very strong Christian beliefs, were authoritarian in general and beat their children religiously to control them.
