Well, children certainly feel horrible when they are hit. They know that they hurt, and are confused, frightened, and have anger all mixed up with the love and trust they have for adults. Is there some positive to this kind of trauma that I am missing? Do you believe that the way a child feels is insignificant in good, healthy development? Is there an automatic presumption that a responsible adult would hit a child to be a good parent? Of course children feel horrible when they've been corrected. I believe that is the intention of the governing guardian, to make the child feel in a more "closer to home" way why a certain behavior is unacceptable. A paddling of some form or another is more often than not the last choice of the guardian (I would hope). Otherwise, couldn't the child also learn by lack of negative reinforcement that ultimately they're able to get away with certain behaviors unacceptable to the parent's beliefs? Lets remember, this issue of corporal punishment is an issue which should be left to the individual given the responsibility of raising the child in a good, moral manner. I don't believe that in 100% of the cases where corporal punishment is applied, the child is confused. I believe there to be innumerable instances where the child knows exactly why it was punished with negative reinforcement. I believe it would be fairer to say the child doesn't like it, which is the whole idea.Is there an automatic presumption that a responsible adult would hit a child to be a good parent? By the same token, [edited] is there an automatic presumption that adults are incapable of raising children when negative reinforcement in the form of corporal punishment is used? -------------------------------------- The reason I asked whether or not you an I are going to have a problem with regard to Edwarda is because I sense some underlying tention from some posters against her which seems to me to be of a more personal nature than being based on issues of a discussion nature. It has been my long standing opinion that you are above such behavior. I hope I will continue to be right in that regard.
