Yes, it would invite harassment of parents who continue the practice, for whatever reason, and it would deprive parents of a disciplinary technique that many of them find useful. It may, in fact, be more effectual than other forms of discipline, even if it has not been definitively proven, and especially with certain temperaments......

while many children do survive the practice, almost all severely damaged--drug and alcohol addicted, imprisoned, mentally ill--children have been spanked.

I think this may have been pointed out before, but isn't it hard to prove a direct correlation between these two factors? Do you think that this kind of "spanking" could border more on BEATING than gentle pats? We have had no terrible behavior problems with CW, despite the light spankings! Also I would not want to be distracted from other important influencing factors -- spanking arising from an angry and loveless home environment, or total neglect except for a physical response.

I think outlawing it-- government intervention-- is way too invasive. I deeply resent anyone taking away my parental authority and I trust my own judgment far more than the group of lowlevel bureaucrats who would implement and enforce such a law. Who knows where they would draw the line? ANd THAT is what bad would come out of it. More power for not terribly smart people is REALLY scary! (Lots scarier than posting an opinion here- which I seem to be happily doing today!!!)
Of course, I was also strongly opposed when they allowed minors to obtain abortions without parental consent. I think you and I argued that one (politely and respectfully, of course!)
