Children belong to society. If parents were going to keep their children locked up forever where they never interacted with anyone else- then they would belong to the parents- but that isn't the way it works. We are doing the equivalent of a captive release program with our kids. We are raising them so that they can survive in the wild on their own- and they aren't going to live with us (the parents) they are going out into the world and to be mostly of the world. And of course primarily children (as little people) belong to themselves- because as people we all have our own identity and right to that identity.

edit- this all sounds horribly new age and I am NOT a new ager at all. I just happen to believe that although children are NOT little adults they ARE little people- and they should be treated with respect, and kindness- at least as well treated as a good friend.

Okay, well, Baroque music I do find a bit, um, pompous sometimes, although I do trust your musical recommendations so far. Perhaps Dolores Keane might be a better choice. I wouldn't want you to worry. Mr. Christine is definitely Irish, and we collect Irish music of all sorts. Could you tell me just a bit more about what style it is musically?

Oh, I forgot something from my Christmas list. I want a huge framed poster of Bono from U2 wearing nothing above the waist except a large cross. He looked really stunning when he used to dress like that on stage when he was about 22, very much a turn on. Now he is almost forty and is looking a lot like Mr. Christine. I could hang it on the ceiling above my bed, except that it would hide all the glowing glittery stars and planets that twinkle there now.

Hey, happy birthday! I hope you have a lovely day tomorrow. Do you have something very special planned?

I don't think children belong to anyone, and that we should treat them that way, especially meaning that no one has the right to hit a child simply because it is his/hers. I believe they should have full civil and human rights. I realize there are horrible abuses when the state steps in, and child protective services often does not protect children at all. However, the larger society does have an interest in generation after generation of healthy children being reared, and should legislate on their behalf. And I think the French policy of universal attendance at preschool at three, with psychological evaluation to bring children (and families) with learning and emotional problems into early treatment, is very healthy.
