iBEAM Broadcasting Obliterates Web Wait With Web Switching From Alteon WebSystems
Web Switching Technology Integrated to Scale Capacity and Ensure Non-Stop Delivery of Streaming Multimedia Content
SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Alteon WebSystems (Nasdaq: ATON - news) today announced that its Web switching products have been selected by iBEAM Broadcasting(TM) Corporation to support its innovative Multimedia Distribution Network.
The partnership between the companies and integration of Web switching technology into iBEAM's infrastructure satisfies an increasing customer demand by content providers and Internet Service Providers for the delivery of higher quality online multimedia services such as Webcasting and Multimedia On-Demand.
Unlike any other company to date, iBEAM(TM) has created the world's largest satellite-based narrowband and broadband network infrastructure specifically optimized to deliver near DVD-quality audio and video content over the Internet.
Web Switch Integration
Alteon 180 Web switches are currently being integrated into iBEAM data centers around the world to provide high-speed Gigabit switching, local and global server load balancing, dynamic application redirection and high-availability services.
Alteon 180 Web switches connect hundreds of content, database and application servers and Web cache appliances via Gigabit connections. To ensure the highest possible levels of resilience within each data center, servers are connected to redundant Alteon Web switches which actively monitor the health of each server and related applications.
To maximize user performance and ensure resilience between remote data centers, iBEAM is using Alteon's global server load balancing technology. Global server load balancing enables user traffic to be automatically directed to the closest and best performing server with available content at the time of each request.
In addition, global server load balancing allows transparent backup of entire sites and fault tolerance between data centers. In the event of a catastrophe or downed site, user traffic is transparently redirected to another data center.
''When it comes to accessing and viewing streaming media on the Internet, speed is a key issue, and we're addressing this issue head on,'' said Zsuzsi Bartfai, director of product architecture for iBEAM Broadcasting. ''Alteon's Gigabit Web switches not only deliver the Web speed that's fundamental in delivering an online multimedia service but the intelligence to ensure near non-stop delivery of that service.''
Bartfai noted that as iBEAM's service and infrastructure rapidly expands, the infrastructure must support thousands of simultaneous streams of traffic. ''The number of requests that we can handle using Alteon's Web switches surpasses all other technologies we've tested. Alteon's distributed processing architecture also enables us to scale to support the processing of literally thousands of simultaneous Web sessions each second.''
iBEAM is currently capable of delivering more than 300,000 simultaneous unique streams of multimedia traffic across its infrastructure and has established points of presence in more than 60 ISP facilities around the world.
