Advanced Customization?

Twice I spent hours fiddling around with options and fonts trying to adjust to the New SI, and now I've gone thru this again with the New Classic SI. Each has been an exercise in total frustration. I'm not against change, and I've long felt that the old SI needed improvement. I now have separate likes and dislikes about each of the three versions of SI. So here's a question I'd like to pose...

Does anyone know if it's feasible for me to write my own interface to SI, by writing some kind of Java applets or whatever that would interact with my web browser? If I can figure out how to do this there are probably other favorite sites I would like to customize (like getting rid of those annoying Maxim banner ads on Yahoo!).

I'm not a web programmer, but I'm gravitating in that direction. I have extensive experience with mainframe screen programming and page-printer formatting, and recently worked on a mainframe/web integration project.
