Dear Silicon Investor:

The purpose of this thread is to discuss and provide comments and feedback on the Classic SI Customization Option.

Let me start by saying - as I've said from the beginning - that this will not be a perfect match to the old SI. As you already know, the Internet is a growing, evolving entity, and Web sites must grow and evolve with it. Sites that don't evolve and change become CobWeb sites and eventually die. I have no doubt that none of you ever want to see SI wither away. My point is simply that in order for the Classic SI to survive, some change would have inevitably been required.

We've made some infrastructure changes and added some new features that will be reflected in the new SI with the Classic wrapper, i.e. view 10 messages, ignore, enhanced message center, real-time quotes, etc. More importantly, we have a boatload of new features in the development cycle, including advanced search, additional message center capabilities (i.e., the ability to file any public post), and a whole lot more.

The bottom line is this...

We cannot afford to develop and add these new features across two radically different platforms/user interfaces. It would slow us down way too much, and if you're not moving fast in Internet space, you might as well not be moving.

Our objective from the start with the Classic SI Customization Option has been to build a second version of SI that exists on our new platform, but mimics the Classic SI look and feel as closely as possible. The critical rationale behind this is that we want to be able to automatically offer it to the members who prefer the Classic look and feel all of the new features and functionality that we have added and will continue to add in the coming weeks, months and years. The key word there is "automatically," which means that we develop it once and it gets "automagically" deployed in both formats. Obviously, in order for that to happen, there needs to be a similar structure to certain pages.

With these thoughts in mind, we welcome your comments, ideas and suggestions.

Thanks,

Bryan
