X-the unknown, I would rather spend money as a society on a child that is loved and has caused no evil. Then spend money as a society on a deadbeat that deals crack cocaine and lives in public housing.

A child in that position deserves everything we as a society can give them.

I am not attacking you personally, but, IMO, the "point" you were making sucks.

If all human things must be viewed only in the strictest logical terms, none of us are more than very sophisticated biological plumbing. Garbage in -- garbage out.

We might as well disband the Coast Guard, for instance, since almost any rescue is inefficient, risky and wasteful of resources.

In the larger context, you seem to deny the child its uniqueness and value in the hearts of its family. You seem to believe the child belongs to society -- society, IMO, being another word for "everyone."

In reality, I believe "everyone" is exactly the same as "no one."

I'm not the naturalist that some of the men and women here are, but if you really believe the young are the property of a collective, you just try getting between a mother and her young in the wild. Bring band-aids, or something.

Although I may never master the etiquette re. entering discussions between others here, I think it would be helpful to confine truly private discussions to PM.

I have agreed with about 95 percent of everything you've offered up in the past few weeks. I disagree strongly in this case.
