I'm not sure I know enough about it to properly explain it, but I'll try. If the folks who operate the head end have to send the designated portal (home page) on a case-by-case basis to the end user, there is the expense of having a different portal for each end user. If all users instead access the same portal, there is far less expense at the head end. Yet the user doesn't suffer because the software (in this case, the program guide) gives the user the customization and flexibility to use as s/he sees fit.

Make sense? If not, we're in trouble because I really don't know how to explain it very well. I might be wrong, but I think I've got it right.
