I didn't intentionally single out Catholic priests, Blue. I would agree that Protestant ministers were probably equally guilty of advocating the domination of women by men. The story I was referring to particularly was from the Canadian Film Board video-The Burning Times--which chronicles the conquering of Europe by the Catholics during the Middle Ages. According to this video (they use illustrations from the period, etc.) in pagan Europe women worked alongside the men in the agrarian economy, and were full partners. As Christianity moved in the Church caused laws to be passed where women, who had been the midwives and healers, would be arrested if they practiced medicine. This all probably had to do with fear of the power and knowledge of women, and perhaps with the abortion issue as well.

I realize that in theory the strong sentiment in Christianity that wives should submit to their husbands, children to their parents COULD be benign, but it does not seem to be so in practice most of the time.
