The use of the power of a nation to commit great evil is the topic of a recent book about Leopold of Belgium and the Belgian Congo, "King Leopold's Ghost". Reading how the natives of the Congo were treated would make a stone weep.

There is a literary treatment that predates that book by a bit. Conrad, "Heart of Darkness", later transmogrified into a famous movie. "I love the smell of Napalm in the morning". The subject of Africa in general makes me shudder, there's still so many bad things going on there, and it's hard to see what can be done about it.

But, on a happier note, S. Africa seems to be doing pretty well these days, and the neighboring countries seem to be settling down somewhat, so maybe there's hope.

Christmas cheers, Dan.

Thanks... I'll look into that book.

Is the Belgian Congo = Congo = Zaire = Rhodesia?

Edit - I looked it up. Congo = Zaire but Rhodesia = Zambia. I remember one of the slams you used to hear about public schools was that the kids didn't know basic geography. Irrelvant now!
