How much is it anyway? How much will M$ make on each desktop? How much will their 'partners' make?

There are 3 factors working against them, with which we are all droningly familiar: application paradigm shift (i.e., Sun's vision), the DOJ, and Linux incursion,

I think you may have left out the most important factor, short term, i.e., all those folks who will be unwilling to junk otherwise perfectly good computers or face major upgrade costs for the sole purpose of upgrading their operating system.
