Road battle threatens mining investment By Lara BradleyThe Sudbury Star - Saturday December 18, 1999. Page A5 A mining company drilling for platinum-palladium in the Lake Wanapatei area is worried about the possibility of the closure of a road leading to it's operations. "People in the Sudbury area will have to come to grips with what they want in their region, whether they want mining companies in the area or not,"said Duncan McLoed,of Flag Resources."Should we be planning on taking our money elsewhere?" A month ago,Buchy Shaw,a cottager who hunts and fishes along MacKelcan Road, submitted a petition with more than 500 signatures to the Ministry of Natural Resources, objecting to the proposed closure of MacKelcan Road before the Wolf Lake Bridge in the Vermilion Forest Management Company's Forest Management Plan. McLoed had no idea the road might be closed until he read about it in the paper.Flag Resources is drilling for minerals near Sylvester Lake.It has been operating in the area for twenty years. The closure of the road would mean the mining company would probably have to fly it's people and machines in and out of the area, significantly adding to it's costs. "Using helicopters as an alternative is incredibly expensive,"he said. There appear to be two factors which are propelling the proposed road closure - Logging interests who want better access to the area, and tourists who want to see pristine wilderness for eco-tourists to enjoy. McLoed said the company has a good environmental record and has had to make compromises in the past. In fact,Flag Resources recently gave up some of it's lands for a provincial park in the region.
