Merry Yule Delbert! The Church didn't usurp Yule, it was incorporated. We preserved it for you. You're welcome.

That the date for celebrating the birth of Christ, which was unknown really, was positioned as an alternative to Saturnalia does not necessarily make it usurpation, IMO. I don't think that you are being urged to concede the Solstice--at least, certainly not by me. Most educated people know, or should know, the history behind the particular date; it does not detract from the potential joy of the celebration for those who believe in the divinity of Christ and for many who do not but who do endorse the spirit of warmth and giving fostered by the holiday.

Hi Del, just thought of something. As you are an atheist, what does it matter to you about celebrating the Solstice? Inquiring minds want to know.;^)

Delbert, as I recall, during a previous incarnation, you and I had pretty much same-same attitudes about a whole bunch of the god stuff.

Now, and I well may be wrong, you seem to have a defensiveness that approaches hostility.

Am I wrong to feel that you were gentler not such a long while back?

And what was the zealot's, the charming, lovable zealot, who had lost his legs, and was really antigonistic to any formalized religion, name? And does he still exist.

Best of the season to you,

geo
