Michael, in the Canadian study of spanking, leading to adults with increased rates of alcoholism, drug abuse and depression, it was not a study of children who had been abused, just spanked. So you cannot really say that an occasional spanking is not harmful to children. Alcoholism, drug addiction and depression all cost societies a lot in terms of lower productivity, increased medical costs, etc.
