FLINT, MI, CALGARY, Dec. 22 /CNW/ - Delphi Automotive Systems (NYSE:DPH) and Global Thermoelectric Inc. announced today that they have successfully tested an integrated solid oxide fuel cell system running on automotive gasoline. The system incorporates a new gasoline reformer designed and built by Delphi together with solid oxide fuel cell stack components from Global.

The Delphi reformer is a cost effective, compact device that changes gasoline into a stream of gases that are fed directly into the Global fuel cell stack. The stack combines the gases with oxygen from the air to produce electricity directly.''The successful testing of this integrated system is a significant event in progress toward an economically viable fuel cell system that will use commonly available fuel for automotive applications'' said Dr. Jean Botti, director of Delphi Energy & Engine Management Systems' Customer Solution Center. Global's President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Perry added that
''by coupling the Delphi reformer with our stack, efficiency is greatly enhanced compared to those systems that require complex fuel processing before the gases can be used in a fuel cell stack''.

I think that this is big news. It does not bode well for hydrogen storage, but it is good for batteries. I have said before that future cars will be hybrid fuel cell, NiMH battery, Lynx drive motors, and I am sticking to it.

I only wish that I had more GLE shares. I only have 300, but will be buying tomorrow. This was a Canadian release, and hasn't been absorbed in the U.S. yet. IMO Ballard is dead meat. GLE is 14.95 Canadian, up 5.35.

Walt, this Postal Service EV order is really good news. The post office is the perfect place to use EVs. They only drive about 30 miles, and can charge off-peak, thus making the electric utilities more efficient. I hope they are NiMH EVs.
