More of the same, Record Highs Expected for Flash Dollar Shipments and Units, According to Cahners In-Stat Group December 22, 1999 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 21, 1999 via NewsEdge Corporation - Flash dollar shipments will exceed $3 billion for 1999 and unit shipments will exceed 1 billion, reports Cahners In-Stat Group. By 2003, flash dollar shipments will exceed $8 billion, representing a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.3 percent from 1999-2003. Both are record highs for flash memory. "1999 has been a very good year for flash memory markets and the memory vendors," said Jesse Huffman, senior analyst with In-Stat. "Early in the year the explosive worldwide cell phone demand set the pace for an up-side year. The offshore economies began recovering, and offshore manufacturing began consuming record quantities of flash memory." Cahners In-Stat Group also expects: -- Emerging consumer electronic products that use flash memory will continue to drive this upbeat trend (i.e., cell phones, MP3 players, digital cameras and portable computing). -- The demand for more product features, along with storing data, will continue to demand higher densities. -- A shortage of 16 Mb and 32 Mb devices began showing up mid-year, followed by a shortage for lower densities down to 2 Mb. ASPs surged by as much as 20 percent or more. Lead times for most densities have extended by as much as 16-20 weeks and this under-capacity situation is expected to last well into 2000.
