PR Newswire - December 22, 1999 16:48

Greg Maffei Leaves Strong Financial Management Organization

REDMOND, Wash., Dec. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) today named John
Connors as senior vice president of finance and administration and chief financial officer effective Jan. 7.
Connors will replace Greg Maffei, who has resigned to accept a position outside the company. Connors will
also become a member of the Microsoft Business Leadership Team. Maffei will remain at Microsoft
through January to help ensure a smooth transition.

Connors, who has been with Microsoft for almost 11 years in various senior management positions, most
recently held the position of vice president of the worldwide enterprise group, responsible for the sales,
services and relationship strategy for large, medium and small businesses across all industries. Prior to that,
Connors was vice president and chief information officer overseeing worldwide internal technologies
infrastructure, corporate information and key internal systems. From 1994 to 1996, he held the position of
corporate controller reporting to then-CFO Mike Brown, where he was responsible for worldwide
accounting, forecasting, and fiscal planning processes and organizations. Before that, Connors was general
manager of worldwide financial operations. He joined Microsoft in 1989 and is a CPA.

"Greg's contributions have been outstanding across the spectrum of numerous deal negotiations, in achieving
excellence in the treasury management area, and in guiding an outstanding internal and external management
reporting team. His strong financial management abilities have helped Microsoft's finance organization to be
recognized as world-class. We wish him the best in his next endeavors," said Bob Herbold, the company's
chief operating officer. "We're pleased and excited to have someone of John Connors' considerable
financial, technical and customer skills returning to lead Microsoft's financial organization. His range of
finance and leadership experience and company knowledge makes him the ideal person to continue the
great work of our finance organization."

"John Connors has been a key member of Microsoft's senior management team for many years and now
steps into the CFO role with a strong track record in financial management, information technologies, sales
and marketing and customer service," said Microsoft President Steve Ballmer. "John is an effective and
respected leader both inside and outside the company. His deep experience in all aspects of Microsoft will
serve the company and our shareholders well."

On an interim basis, the Worldwide Enterprise Group will report to Jeff Raikes.
