Hi George, glad to hear (no pun intended!) that you have survived your surgery, and that your prognosis is good. I am casting about for a clever joke about having fat pads in the ears, but nothing is coming. Perhaps that's for the best.

I don't know how far you care to take the sharing - your aerie? Your sandwich? Surely you'd give half your Olga-sandwich to a hungry homeless person, or maybe a whole one, but would you give it to Donald Trump?

I suggest that the impulse to keep a place sacred to its gods or goddesses isn't selfishness, in the sense of greed. To me it has more of the impulse to keep old growth redwoods from the chainsaw, and prevent development of national parks. As well as a recognition that what's jealous here isn't necessarily the worshipers, but may well be the spirits that inhabit the place.

There is also a strong element of differentiation. Christians are NOT Pagans, Jews are NOT Muslims, Bhuddists do NOT practice Shinto. In that sense, what is there to share? The different faiths deliberately follow different paths. They need different places, too.

Just realized something: I don't agree that sharing should be the MO of all human beings. Possibly because I am the oldest of five siblings. What is mine, I love, I cherish, and I may share, but not always.
