A wry note:

"Those of us who have been around a few years can remember when the tobacco companies were national heroes, not villains. Not only did the free cigarettes distributed during World War II keep the GIs marching forward through the blazing fire of the German 88s, they also served as currency in the newly 'liberated' areas. That generation of Americans adored the 'weed' as chic and sophisticated but they were very wary of stocks, most of which had not retumed to their 1929 price levels.

"Here it is, 1999, and tobacco is the handmaiden of the devil and stocks are the Savior of a middle class devastated by corporate downsizing and the export of high-wage jobs to low-wage countries. But the cigarettes of 1999 are little different from those of 1945 and same is true of equities. The only things that have changed are the popular delusions connected with smoking tobacco and investing in stocks."

To All, "Mommy, how soon until next Christmas?" <g> Deal of the day: healthquick.com You get $15 off your first order. And, if you order $20 worth, 2 day shipping is free. I just bought $20 worth of stuff for $5. Not exactly like winning Publisher's Clearing House, but worth doing.

I hope everyone had a happy Christmas. I sure did. Now I have to find another happy ho, ho, ho for tonight. <g>
