THE President and CEO of Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC), Japan, Mr. Osamu Suzuki, has said the Japanese automobile major will extend all the necessary cooperation and support to Maruti Udyog Ltd (MUL) for enabling the latter to launch one new passenger car model every year.

Speaking at the formal inauguration of MUL's third assembly plant, Mr. Suzuki said that with the commencement of the new plant, the company can now manufacture both the new cars - the Baleno and the Wagon-R - in the modern facility.

The total installed capacity of the company's manufacturing facilities, including the third plant, has gone up by one lakh vehicles per annum to a level of 3.5 lakh vehicles per annum. The total production capacity, on a two-shift basis and at more than 100 per cent utilisation can, however, go up to half a million vehicles per annum, Mr. Jagdish Khattar, Managing Director of MUL, said.

He added that with this expansion of installed capacities, MUL's actual production capacity will make the company the largest passenger car company outside Japan and Korea, with world-class volumes. Mr. Khattar also felt MUL was not only confident of utilising the additional capacities generated by the third plant, but that with the launch of the Wagon-R and the Alto, the company would soon need to augment the existing capacity in order to cater to the growing market demand.

The MUL Managing Director said that in order to retain the company's leadership position, it has to expand the dealer network. Till the end of November this year, the company already has 154 dealers, 194 showrooms, 242 workshops, 1,119 authorised service stations, 28 stockists and 15 boutiques spread over 534 cities in the country.
