I am strongly in favor of SSTF investing in the markets, but not indexes or bonds. I would like it to pick those companies that are committed to expansion and foreign trade, especially tech and medical startups. I have a faultless way to pick the successful startups. Suppose the SBA loans had been stock in promising startups instead of strip joints and bad ethnic restaurants. Suppose NASA had invested those funds in tech startups instead of the stupid space shuttle and self-destroying probes. It's easy and it works.
I don't want SSTF to invest in dead dogs like GM and T. I want things like GBLX and foreign companies like JDSU and PCCLF. When tech startups work, they change the world. When they don't they stretch the envelope. Who gives a damn if there is another automobile factory in the world?
Of course, there is always the danger that the SSTF investments will be politically motivated. As long as the selection process is open and the voters have the chance to see what's up with the company, who cares. People will see how important it is to support the real innovators and to avoid the old imbedded wealth. Would you vote for a government that convicted MSFT if it was your biggest stockholding?
