I am not sure exactly what a "sage brush tramp" is, Coug. Perhaps you could elaborate? In my readings about Santa Claus, it seemed like there was a very strong connection with Scandinavian pagan gods, including Odin. One of the Santa predecessors had reindeer horns, in fact. If you are interested in the Gold Rush, you might enjoy this article from one of our local papers this week about the great San Francisco Christmas Eve fire a hundred and fifty years ago. I particularly liked the remark by the urban archaeologist quoted there who remarked that we romanticize the Gold Rush, but really it was more like our Tenderloin (our very scary red light district, with plenty of drugs and violence and ex-convicts) at 2:00 am. sfgate.com
