Seoul asks China to allow Korean firms' participation in CDMA, car projects
Finance and Economy Minister Kang Bong-kyun has asked Chinese officials to increase the opportunities for Korean companies to participate in China's telecom and auto projects, the Ministry of Finance and Economy said yesterday.

In the first meeting between economy ministers of the two countries in Beijing, Kang asked for China's support for Korean firms' participation in the first-stage CDMA (code division multiple access) projects in four Chinese provinces.

A Chinese telecom operator is planning to build a CDMA network with initial capacity of four million lines. Korean telecom equipment firms are seeking to help the Chinese carrier construct the network.

Kang also asked for support in completing Daewoo's auto plant in China and in other large projects involving reactors, high-speed railway and mid-sized aircraft production.

Other requests included allowing the Shanghai branches of Korea Development Bank and Hanvit Bank to trade the yuan, upgrading Hana Bank's representative office in Shanghai to a local branch and allowing Samsung Fire and Marine Insurance to enter the Chinese insurance market.

The ministry said Chinese officials promised full support for the requests.

Kang held one-on-one meetings with Chinese Vice Premier Li Lanqiang, State Development Planning Commission Minister Zeng Peiyan, Finance Minister Xiang Huaicheng, and Dai Xianglong, governor of the People's Bank of China.

Prior to this round, Seoul and Beijing had been holding vice-minister economic talks since 1992 before upgrading the meeting to the ministerial-level. (SST)

GO*QCOM...I believe NXTL will probably acquire the Nextwave (NW) spectrum from an FCC auction soon for several $billion.

In your opinion, if NXTL acquires the NW spectrum will this open the door for NXTL to use CDMA?
