X -- my son lives in a lovely neighborhood (no ref. given as I have no right to encroach on his privacy) among attorneys, engineers and EEEEK, other teachers. Tiny lot, but somehow they squeezed the pool in. Mkt value about 500K. Very important reiteration -- teachers who hit the door when the bell rings can't pull this off. You have to hang around a few more hours and do the extra jobs that make the school really worthwhile. You have to teach during the summer. You have to tutor. You have to offer your talents to business when you have time and interest. My kid's base compensation is quite close to what he would get in PS after 10 years. His commitment to his profession, school and students takes him well beyond. He is not unique. I know a good number of his associates and all take similar approach and do very well. IMO, the CA public education establishment is its own worst enemy. M
