What's the difference between the likelihood of CREE's competitors growing better SiC and the likelihood of Qualcomm's competitors making better CDMA chip sets?

Mike, good point, and a question I also posed on the Q thread, but without reference to cree. However, the potential problem that concerns me about cree does not translate directly to Q for two reasons: Q owns IPRs on the CDMA technology, and an ASIC is much more complex than a crystal. Unless someone tells me that cree owns a patent on SiC or on a unique way of manufacturing it, its BTE is much lower than that for Q. Having said that, I think in the longer term someone will indeed beat Q to making cheape ASICs, and my bet is on Kyo or some other Japanese company. However, between now and then we will make a lot of money, and even after that there should be residual IPRs. JMHO.

Growing better SiC is an experimental skill. Designing better CDMA chips is a kind of theoretical skill, needing mathematics/physics etc. People who are tops at both of these skills are in short supply but it's easier to obtain the former than the latter.
