Growing better SiC is an experimental skill. Designing better CDMA chips is a kind of theoretical skill, needing mathematics/physics etc. People who are tops at both of these skills are in short supply but it's easier to obtain the former than the latter.

malcolm,
i mean this to be humorous...hope you take it that way.

have to smile at that statement! let's look at this...

to improve the cell telephone...hire the finest, most brilliant minds. folks with mathematics and physics training...theoreticians.

to find a meteorite. to discover a new high quality crystal formation never found on earth. to figure out how to use it to replace light bulbs, improve communications, make switches, improve power plants, make replacement diamonds, improve microwave transmission, develop a blue laser, make semi-conductors work at temperatures never thought possible....to do all of this....
which btw cree has done over the past 10 years....
does not require theoretical skills, mathematics, or physics.

to do these, the simple tasks, should we hire high school drop-outs?

:o)
