GAUGIE UPDATE:

I just talked to Gaugie. It was amazing. He sounded perfectly coherent, not even particularly sleepy. Tired, but not groggy.

The surgery went well. He has pain, but has a morphine pump, and it is tolerable pain. He says the sun is out, there's a big tree outside his window, he's about to get a good lunch (not hospital food). He is in good spirits.

I had talked to three nurses, or hospital employees, by the time I got to Gaugie himself, and they were all so nice it was eerie. At least to a New Yorker it was eerie.

Gaugie said that I should PM the direct dial number to the phone by his bed to anyone from DAR who asks me for it. I said I was worried he'd tire himself out, but he says if he doesn't want to talk, he'll say so. I assume he can turn the phone off if he needs to, too. I didn't think to ask that. I wish I had.

It was wonderful to hear him sounding so good.
