GUANGZHOUÿKorean telecom maker LG Information &
Communications has formed a joint venture in mainland China to
manufacture and market (wireless local loop) systems based a CDMA
technology.

Guangzhou Post & Telecom Equipment Co. (GPTE) and Guangdong
Telecommunication Academy of Science and Technology (GTAST)
are LG's local partners in the newly formed Guangzhou LG-TOPS
Communication Technologies Co. LG and GPTE each hold a 40
percent interest, while GTAST acquires a 20 percent stake in the
venture, in which about $160 billion will be invested.

After production facility is completed by the first half of next year,
about one million circuits will be produced annually, according to LG
sources. The new company will initially concentrate on telecom
infrastructure, manufacturing CDMA-based WLL systems.

The company plans to take a majority of mainland's CDMA market
share in three years, eventually manufacturing CDMA handsets as
well. LG has been targeting China as a major market quite for some
time. CDMA WLL equipment export deals with Meizhou City,
Heyuan City and Quanzhou City are also under negotiations.

Chaz, the emphasis of this JV seems to be WLL. Handsets are in the plans further out.
