The 1/2000 issue of Wired Magazine has an article on page 162 concerning microelectromechanical systems (acronym MEMS). These are tiny machines made from multilayer polysilicon (20 connected gears fit on a space as big as the period ending this sentence.) While this is obviously disruptive technology, it hasn't found much use yet.
While reading this article it occurred to me that SiC might be better than polysilicon, since it is much harder and can tolerate higher temperatures. I have no idea about whether it's other properties might fit this use.
